WE'RE SO COOKED
Mixed 2D / 3D | NPR Rendering | Animation
Fig 1: We're medium-well at this rate
This short animation bemoans the slow but certain encroachment of LLM chatbots into our lives and minds, while we wait for the right time to start worrying -- as though we aren't already cooked.
Breakdown
None of the models in this render are quite what they seem; rather, this piece began as a 2D, black and white image painted in Clip Studio, which was projected, layer-by-layer, onto cards in Blender. These cards were then retopologized around the drawings' contours, and extruded into the third dimension..
These extruded cards could then be illuminated by colorful light sources in Blender, and the lights' colors multiplied by our initial, black and white painting, to produce a uniquely hand-drawn look.
Animations were made by either sculpting and keyframing shape-keys, such as with the main subject's facial expressions, or rigging and weight-painting the extruded cards directly, such as with the fingers.
